VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP # 4
Deep Water Turbidites in the Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas
Lafayette Geological Society Field Trip
March 16 - 18, 2001
|
Our virtual fieldtrip is based upon "Field Guide to Deep Water Turbidites in the Ouachita Mountains, Arkansas" by Martin Link (Reservoirs, Inc.), Charles Stone (Arkansas Geological Commission), Barry Wawak (Core Petrophysics, Inc.), Ron Cormier (Core Petrophysics, Inc.).
The field trip routes us through seven Jackfork Formation (Pennsylvanian--Morrowan) exposures and one Stanley Formation (Mississippian) exposure of Carboniferous deep-water, fine-grained turbidites in the southeastern Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. Jackfork sites include DeGray Spillway, Hollywood Quarry, Souther Quarry, Kirby Quarry, McCain Mall in North Little Rock, Big Rock Quarry in North Little Rock, and Pinnacle Mountain State Park. The roadcut through the Stanley Formation (Mississippian--Chesterian) at the McLeod Exit, Martin Luther King Expressway, Hot Springs, affords us an opportunity to examine a mud-dominated sequence of turbidite sediments in a series of distal, layered, thin-bedded, fine-grained sand sheets .
