Baumgardner Quarry, Kirby Mountain

Separator

The Baumgardner Quarry exposes the Jackfork Formation in 6 cuts on 3 levels along the ridge line of Kirby Mountain. Along the lower level ( bench), stand layered sheet sands (lobes) and distal, layered sheet sands. Good examples of amalgamated sheet sands with large shale clasts, distal sheet sands, channelized sheets, and distal sheet sands are situated along the cut on the upper bench. One can discern tool marks, plant fossils, contorted bedding, shale clasts, and nodular shale. At the top of the lowest bench lie the coarsest grained beds in this sequence. These coarse grained beds may be correlated to the granule conglomerate beds in the upper part of the Jackfork spillway.
